East Meets West

Over fifty West Hatch pupls were chosen to take part in an "East Meets West Fashion Extravaganza" recently held at the Guildhall in London. This was a very high profile civic event in aid of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK where our pupils, plus those from two other London schools, joined stars from the world of sport, media and entertainment.

The focus for the evening was fashion and music showing how both can unite to tackle bowel cancer.

Over £40,000 was raised on the night with West Hatch pupils, Miss Serman and Miss Tomlinson providing all the music.

Essex Police Young People of the Year Awards 2010

On the basis of pupils' involvement in the above, they have been shortlisted as finalists in the Essex Young People of the Year Competition. They now have to impress the judges who include the Lord Lieutenant of Essex who represents the Queen, the Chief Constable, MPs, Mayors and Council Chairmen.

If successful, students will be able to donate further money to the Bobby Moore Cancer Fund.

BBC School Report

For the third year running West Hatch pupils are involved in this exciting project. They will be covering three main stories interviewing the following people:

  1. Gino D'Acampo, winner of the 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here' and TV chef about life before and after his celebrity status
  2. The manager of Primark and its customers about child labour and ethical trading at the Oxford Street branch
  3. Key personnel at Ernst and Young focussing on how important qualifications and education are leter in life

Home Access to free computer IT Scheme and Individual Support Grants for Computing.

School Nutrition Action Group

We are forming a School Nutrition Action Group (SNAG) this term with representatives from all areas of schoollife, including parents. Some of the various issues we will be consulting on include cashless catering, pricing and specific dietary requirements. If you would be interested in joining us, please could you contact Mrs Newman on 0208 506 5371 or bnewman@westhatch.essex.sch.uk.

'Outstanding Partnerships with Parents' Award

We have been delighted to hear that we have won a national award for 'Outstanding Partnerships with Parents', which is as a result of the great work the Parents Voice carry out on behalf of the school. Working very closely with parents is something we really value and are very pleased to have this national recognition.

Extended Schools Provision

Further to the questionnaire completed recently by parents, a detailed Action Plan has now been completed. Developments to date include a breakfast service which is now offered before school every day from 8:15am. We have now secured funding to install flood-lighting around one of the hard play/court areas, which will increase our ability to open up provision after school for both West Hatch teams as well as other local teams.

We now have Police surgeries operating every month where students can talk informally about issues that are concerning them or that they require more information about. Our Practice Nurses now also operate a drop-in session where pupils can go for advice if needed. Details of both surgeries will be displayed in school.

Parent Governor Vacancy

We are fortunate to have very supportive Governors who contribute much to the life and work of the school. Due to the retirement of Penny King, we have a Parent Governor vacancy and invite nominations to fill this place. If you are interested in finding out more about what being a Parent Governor entails, please call Mrs Pat Laker at the school (0208 504 8216) who will be very happy to send you more information. Please be reassured that whilst specialist knowledge or relevant experience is useful, common sense and a willingness to give time are key requisites.
